Last Saturday we had the pleasure of giving a design masterclass to a rather special group of young people at the Chelsea College of Arts. We were invited by the The Sorrell Foundation to form part of their brilliant National Art & Design Saturday Club, which encourages and provides opportunities for young people in the arts.
We, along with the amazing design duo Musson+Retallick and inventive architect Thomas Randall-Page presented to the Saturday Clubs' members from schools across East, South and North London about what drives us as creatives and also give them a chance to get hands on with our design methodology.
After a demo of the principles of our folding techniques we encouraged the students to let their imagination and spacial inspiration take their designs forward - with such a broad brief we were anxious to see what they would create and so were thrilled when we saw their pieces coming together.
The jaw-droppingly gorgeous architecture of the Chelsea College of Arts was the perfect foil to their freshly folded work, in consultation with the students, we hung it from the huge stairwell and the pieces came to life as a integrated installation.
“Huge thanks for giving such a great Masterclass, it was obvious that all the young people were enjoying it very much and John and I could see their sense of pride as it was installed in the staircase, it looked beautiful.”
Working with the students was such a rewarding and exhilarating experience and we were so amazed by what they achieved in such a short amount of time. It's something we'll certainly hope to do again in the future.
This was a workshop designed to inspired the young people we met. Unexpectedly we too came home full of inspirations and ideas of where to go from here.
